JORHAT ENGINEERING COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

OUR  ACTIONS AND VIEWS  AFTER  THE   MEETING  CONVENED BY  THE  CORE  COMMITTEE  AND  HELD  ON 8.O8.1O

The meeting convened by the Core Committee of JEC Golden Jubilee was held on 8.8.10 in the auditorium of our college and it was attended by a large number of alumni, faculty members, retired faculty members like Prof. Ms N. Buragohain, Prof. A.M. Peters, Prof.Dr. D.Deka , students etc.

The views of the Core Committee …a committee formed by the Principal were placed before the house by Dr. P.K. Sarma, Dr. T. Nath and by the Principal Dr. A.Bora. Thereafter, various views were expressed by other alumni members, faculty members including the retired ones and students.

Dr. H.K.Barua presented his views in line with the perception, adopted by the Central Executive Body in its meeting held earlier. His presentation has been given herein as an attachment.

We all expected to arrive at some decisions in respect of the following:

  1. Formation of a broad based Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee,
  2. Period of  Celebration,
  3. Activities to be pursued for development of the college including the source of fund and
  4. Mode of Celebration.

We all were disappointed on the final outcome of the meeting. Except for the period of celebration over a period of one year, no other decision could be taken because of the different stand taken by different participants. However, apparently, the deliberations made were mostly in favour of a single day opening ceremony to be followed by a grand closing ceremony at a later date after a substantial number of face lifting and developmental works are done. Dr. H.K.Barua’s last attempt for summarization of the views also eventually failed. Dr. A. Bara, Principal presiding over the meeting finally concluded the meeting with his final message of sustaining the glory of the college.

From the evening of that day, we started receiving comments of disappointment and resentment from many of our matured and responsible alumni. Having seen this situation,
We, the following members had a discussion in the next morning:

  1. Dr. H.K.Barua, Founder President,
  2. Mr. P.C.Goswami, President,
  3. Mr. J.C. Majumder, President of Guwahati Chapter
  4. Mr. K.L. Das, Retired Commissioner of APWD and
  5. Mr. K.Choudhury, Retired Secretary of Irrigation Department, Assam

We decided to meet Dr. Bora and accordingly met him in the Chamber of the Principal at around 9 a.m. of 9.O8.1O and expressed our feelings freely in a cordial atmosphere. We laid stress on  the following points specifically during our discussion:

  1. A few words about the resentment and disappointment of our alumni,
  2. Necessity of a democratically chosen Celebration Committee’
  3. A few words of appreciation for the initial works done by the Core Committee,
  4. Necessity of finalization of the list of activities to be pursued and the sources of fund to be required for execution of works.
  5. Necessity of taking all measures to create a strong sense of unity among teachers, students and alumni, which we recognize as the basic requirement to achieve the grand success of our objective of celebrating the Golden Jubilee Year.

We are thankful to Dr. Bara for his positive response to our views. We look forward to extend our help in the positive direction. Our next GBM will be held very soon. A detailed discussion on our approach to the Golden Jubilee Celebration will possibly come up in the GBM. All members of our association will expectedly attend this GBM.

A copy of  this note has been mailed to Dr. Bora, President of the Core Committee for his information.
